“Rook” is a player controlled scavenger type UESC “frame”. While choosing Rook you will be put into an on-going match. You have very little risk and very high reward potential with this shell. You’ll be given a basic starter kit when running Rook. You won’t be able to bring anything of your own with this shell but can extract with everything you find. Rook has a tactical ability to blend into the UESC. Other players may choose to help or eliminate Rooks as they don’t have a team and are completely solo. Everything you loot you keep and can store into your vault.
Bungie’s Joe Ziegler (Game Director) says the following:
Sometimes you just, you just want to take a breather after a bunch of runs and kind of just go on a run to see what happens, Rook is really fun for that. Instead of focusing on progression and questing, it’s a mode where we make it easier for you to just drop into a match that is in progress and run about and scavenge as much as possible and get out with it and populate your vault for future runs
