More tough news hits from the Marathon/Bungie camp as Sony has apparently cancelled all planned paid marketing for the game in the month of May/June before it’s supposed launch in September.
This is yet another blow on top of the Stolen Art Assets, overall “luke-warm” reception that Marathon has got since it’s Gameplay reveal and Alpha test last month and Developers warning Bungie leadership that numerous features (i.e. lack of PvE) would harm the games reception and potential audience gain.
The following quote is from “Colin Moriarty”, When he shared news in the latest (paywalled) episode of the Sacred Symbols+ podcast.
“I was told by someone familiar with marketing plans in a key overseas market that there are now no plans to do paid marketing for Marathon at all,” Moriarty said during the podcast. “I don’t know if those plans were affected by what has recently happened or if that was always the plan or whatever. But it is considered a fairly unusual move for a game of this high profile.”
With all this controversy and negative light that is on Bungie and Marathon, a delay might be what’s best for the game and studio. While nothing has officially been confirmed yet, this would be likely seeing how Sony acquired Bungie and “needs to Break into top 5 NPD sales of the year to be considered a success” according to Forbes own Paul Tassi
